Queen Creek dentist, Dentist in Queen Creek, AZ

In General it is very important for your child’s safety that you follow these instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious complications prior to, during, or after the sedation procedure.

Because of the importance of this appointment and the number of patients needing to get in for sedations, our office REQUIRES at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. If appointment is changed in less than 48 hours notice, you may be charged the $180 deposit.

Change in Health

Please notify us of any changes in your child’s medical history. DO NOT bring your child in to treatment with a fever, ear infection, upper respiratory infection, cough or congestion. If your child becomes ill, please notify the office immediately to reschedule this appointment.

Eating and Drinking

To avoid vomiting during the sedative, DO NOT allow your child to eat or drink prior to the appointment. The following dietary schedule MUST be strictly followed.

No Food or Drink after midnight the night prior to the scheduled appointment

Medications

Give your child only those medications that he/she takes routinely such as anti-seizure medications, insulin, anti-hyperactive or other medications (antibiotics) prescribed by your child’s physician or dentist. DO NOT give any other medications before or after treatment without the consent of Dr. Montoya.

Remember to dress your child comfortably in loose fitting clothes and short sleeves. Girls should not have barrettes or pony tails in their hair. Please make sure your child uses the bathroom prior to his/her dental appointment and just before beginning treatment.

Our primary objective in caring for your child is the same as yours. We want to restore your child’s mouth to a state of good dental health, while keeping your child as comfortable as possible during this process. The ultimate goal of a pediatric dental sedation is two- fold, first to complete all or a majority of your child’s dental treatment within the shortest amount of time possible, and secondly, to alleviate a majority or all of the anxiety that usually accompanies a long or difficult dental procedure.

Dr. Montoya will give your child the sedative medication. You will wait in the room while it takes effect. When Dr. Montoya begins treatment, you will be asked to leave the room. You will be given updates from the trained staff as of the progress of your child. Initially, the sedative may make your child irritable or hyperactive and they will quickly lose their coordination.

- DO NOT allow your child to walk or stand unassisted during this early period of sedation

- Parents are asked to not leave the office during the entire appointment time.

During Treatment

For your child’s safety, a protective wrap may be placed that helps prevent sudden and unnecessary movement. This wrap acts to protect your child from injuring themselves or a staff member. This is used for the child’s protection, not punishment. If you have a concern with this technique, please feel free to discuss it with Dr. Montoya prior to receiving the sedative medication. Due to the nature of the medical/dental treatment involved, ALL family members must remain in the reception area during treatment.

These sedatives allow the dentist to work while your child is comfortably resting. This medication is a sedative and not a general anesthetic. The medications are primarily used to minimize the patient’s long term memory of this procedure. Whether the child is awake or not during treatment, very little will be recalled on a long term basis. We will also be placing a nosepiece over your child’s nose to supply them with both oxygen and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This will help keep your child in a relaxed state of sedation and will ensure that they receive an adequate amount of oxygen throughout the procedure. Try not to worry, as your child will be closely monitored and well taken care of throughout the treatment.

In some instances, oral conscious sedation is not effective. In these cases, it may be necessary to discontinue the sedation process, wait for the child to become ambulatory and alert and re-appoint the patient for either another type of conscious sedation or possibly IV sedation. If this occurs, you may be asked to pay for the sedation fee $200. Insurance companies WILL NOT pay for this as no work was actually completed. Some of this entire fee may be applied to the next visit. Dr. Montoya will discuss this with you should the occasion arise.

Following the Treatment Your child will remain in a slightly sedated state for up to 4 hours after this visit and will not be able to partake in any activities, including returning to school. Allow them to rest quietly and provide them with plenty of clear fluids. When speaking to your child regarding this appointment, only positive, complimentary statements are appropriate. A positive post-treatment period will guarantee that your child will begin to build confidence in the dentist and will ensure that subsequent appointments are much less stressful and do not require sedative medications.
