During the course of your child’s life, he or she will have two sets of teeth; primary (baby) teeth and secondary (permanent) teeth. The primary teeth erupt around ages 6-8 months. All 20 primary teeth are in place by age 3.
There are 32 secondary teeth in the permanent dentition. Permanent teeth will start to erupt around age 6, followed by the 12-year molars, and last, the wisdom teeth. Almost all permanent teeth are present between ages 12 and 14. Wisdom teeth typically begin breaking through from age 17 and on.
Your child’s front teeth are called incisors. The sharp “fang-like” teeth are canines. The next side teeth are referred to as pre-molars or bicuspids, and the back teeth are molars.
